I had a conversation with my father recently that brought a powerful lesson back into focus, one that has shaped my outlook on life and business.
I was traveling into work, as I do every day, and decided to give my dad a call. Now, my father is 74 years old, born in the south of France in a town called Saint-Gilles (a name that’s as wonderful as the man himself). We talk regularly, and each time, I learn something new from him—whether it’s about life, perspective, or business.
That particular day, our conversation turned to a piece of wisdom that he often shares with me: “The reason why the world is so beautiful,” he said, “is because everybody is so different, and you need to understand that.”
This simple, yet profound statement stuck with me. It’s something that I’ve carried with me through life and my career, but hearing it again from my father made me pause and reflect even more deeply.
Celebrating Our Differences
Over the years, I’ve come to realise that this is a truth that applies to so much more than just personal relationships. It’s true in our careers, too.
For instance, not everyone wants to be a lawyer—and that’s perfectly okay. In fact, many people might not even have the desire to follow that path, and that’s fine as well. The same goes for becoming a policeman, a teacher, or any other profession that society often holds up as prestigious or “ideal.” Just as it’s okay for someone to not want to pursue these paths, it’s equally okay for someone to want to work in sales or entrepreneurship—and again, not everyone will feel the same way about it.
And that’s the beauty of life.
The Power of Different Perspectives
The diversity of our desires, careers, and perspectives is what makes the world so vibrant. When we embrace this, we see the richness in the variety of paths that people choose to take, not just for themselves, but for the impact they have on the world.
Take the world of sales, for example. There are those who thrive on the challenge of making deals, connecting with people, and driving business forward. For others, that lifestyle or job might be completely out of reach. But neither path is better or worse; they are simply different.
Entrepreneurship, much like sales, is another path that not everyone is cut out for—and that’s fine. It’s a journey that requires risk, resilience, and a willingness to face uncertainty head-on. But some people might find fulfillment in other areas of life, and that’s something to be celebrated, not judged.
Understanding and Appreciating Our Paths
What really struck me about my father’s words was this idea that appreciating the differences in others isn’t just about tolerance—it’s about understanding that these differences enrich us. When we step back and accept that not everyone will have the same goals, ambitions, or passions, we open ourselves up to a broader and more beautiful world.
We begin to see the value in every individual’s journey, and we can foster more inclusive, collaborative, and innovative environments, whether that’s in business, within our families, or in our communities.
At the end of the day, understanding that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to life or work helps us grow as people. It allows us to appreciate others for who they are and what they bring to the table.
So, when I reflect on my father’s wisdom, I’m reminded to never lose sight of the diversity that makes this world so special.
Embrace it. Celebrate it. And be open to understanding that everyone’s journey is different, but that’s what makes it all worthwhile. We all have our unique contributions to make, and that’s what makes the world—our world—so beautiful.
And as for me, I’m thankful for the journey that I’ve had so far and for the people I’ve met along the way who have helped me grow, whether they’re in sales, business, or simply in life.
