January feels like the right time to talk about the subject of focus because let’s be honest, if there’s ever a point in the year to be laser focused – it’s the start.
Focus isn’t a personality trait, it’s architecture.
I don’t rely on willpower (because I’m human) – I build systems that make the right thing easy and the wrong thing awkward. When these 5 small habits are humming, my calendar lines up with my commitments and results start coming.
1) Write tomorrow’s Top 3 before you leave today
The brain loves an open loop. I close it each afternoon by picking three needle-movers, blocking time for them and laying out anything I’ll need.
When I sit down in the morning, I’m not negotiating with myself, I’m executing a plan made when I was calm and rational.
I’d even go so far as to write down a one-line “definition of done” under each task so there’s zero wiggle room. Non negotiable.
2) Phone in another room for deep work
My phone’s a slot machine with a thousand contacts whose KPI is my attention. For 90-minute deep-work blocks, it lives in another room. Messages can wait; customers and creativity can’t. I’ve also killed all non-human notifications. If it’s truly urgent, they’ll call.
In fact, I now use Do Not Disturb with an “allow list” to protect the flow without creating anxiety.
3) Time-box decisions
Most decisions don’t need more info, they need a deadline. Ten minutes for small choices, one hour for medium, one day for big. Decide, document the rationale, and move. Changing a decision is allowed but drifting isn’t.
We keep a lightweight “decision log” so future us remembers what past us knew.
4) Protect sleep like revenue
Peak performance is a lifestyle, not a hack.
I treat sleep like a line item – consistent wake up time, lights down at the same time each night and tomorrow’s worries captured on paper so they don’t file for tenancy in my head. Sleep remains the cheapest legal performance enhancer on Earth.
Travel days? I still defend the wake up window and skip late screens. Future me says thanks.
5) One hard thing before 10am
The task I’m most likely to dodge gets the morning spotlight.
One brave, focused hour unlocks momentum for the rest of the day. Progress creates energy and energy creates more progress.
If I miss the window, I reschedule it the same day.
Essentially, your calendar is your character.
Guard attention like equity because attention invested daily becomes a huge advantage, so take it.
