Sometimes, we need to pause and reflect on where it all began.
A few weeks ago, I had a conversation with someone who had watched one of our podcast episodes on YouTube. During our chat, they showed me a photo they had taken at a train station that morning.
Looking at that image, I was immediately transported back to a time in my life that shaped my journey. It reminded me of where I started, how far I’ve come, and the lessons I’ve learned along the way.
A Fresh Start in Manchester
Years ago, when I first moved to Manchester, I found myself in a position where I needed a job, and I needed it quickly. Although I had a great friend who welcomed me into his home and provided a roof over my head, I knew that I couldn’t rely on others for too long. I had a strong desire to stand on my own two feet, to take responsibility for my own future.
One morning, while I was waiting for a train in Manchester, I walked past a Metro.co.uk newspaper stand. I picked up that day’s copy and flipped to the jobs section, hoping for an opportunity. I wasn’t looking for anything glamorous or life-changing. I was just looking for a job.
That’s when something in the classifieds caught my eye: FHM.
An Unlikely Opportunity
Now, before anyone jumps to conclusions, this wasn’t the FHM you’re probably thinking of—this wasn’t about magazines or anything of the sort. The ad’s headline read: “FHM… Fun + Hard work = Money.” While I didn’t know exactly what the ad meant at the time, I was intrigued enough to respond. I figured, why not give it a shot?
I went for the interview, and to my surprise, I was offered a job selling door-to-door, commission-only, for some of the UK’s biggest brands. It wasn’t glamorous, it wasn’t what I had planned for, but it was an opportunity—and sometimes, that’s all you need to get started.
Embracing Opportunity and Hard Work
I can’t say that I saw it as a calling at the time. Honestly, I just needed a job. But looking back, that experience shaped everything that followed. The willingness to step out and seize an opportunity, even one that wasn’t part of my original plan, was the first step toward the life I have now.
What this experience taught me is something that I’ve carried with me throughout my career: You never know where your journey will take you, but if you remain open to opportunities, work hard, and stay committed, the possibilities are endless.
The Ripple Effect of Opportunity
Fast forward to today, and as I look at the sales teams and leaders across our businesses, I see the same story repeating itself. Many of them, just like I did, are simply looking for a chance to stand on their own feet, to build something for themselves, and to enjoy the rewards of their hard work. It fills me with an immense sense of pride to be able to offer young people the same opportunity that I found all those years ago.
It’s a reminder that every career, no matter how big or small, starts with a simple choice to step into the unknown. And sometimes, that small step leads to something much bigger than we ever expected.
The Lesson
So, why do I share this story? Because it’s important to remember that we all start somewhere. And the road to success isn’t always a straight path. Sometimes, the key is to stay open to opportunities, even if they don’t look exactly like what you imagined.
With hard work, resilience, and the right mindset, you never know where that opportunity might lead you.
