Over the years, I’ve realised something quite simple but powerful:
When my fitness is right, everything else in my life improves.
Business feels clearer.
Decisions feel easier.
My mood is better.
My energy is higher.
And when it’s not? I feel it straight away.
I used to treat fitness as something separate. Something you squeeze in if you have time. Something that sits around work, family, and everything else going on.
Now, I see it completely differently.
Fitness isn’t an add on. For me, it’s the foundation.
And once I made that shift, everything changed.
Early on, like most people, I trained in bursts. A few good weeks, then life would get busy and it would drop off. I’d tell myself I’d get back into it when things slowed down.
But things don’t slow down.
There’s always something happening… work, pressure, commitments. If you wait for the perfect time to prioritise your health, it never comes.
That’s when I made it non negotiable.
Now it’s part of my routine. Locked in. Just like work. Just like meetings. Just like everything else that matters.
Because the return you get from it is huge.
It clears your head like nothing else.
There’s something about training that resets your mind. Whether it’s a run, a ride or a session in the gym, it forces you into the present moment.
You’re not thinking about emails or problems, you’re focused on what’s in front of you.
And when you finish, things feel clearer.
Problems shrink. Decisions sharpen. Perspective improves.
Some of my best thinking doesn’t happen at a desk, it happens when I’m moving.
It builds discipline that transfers everywhere
Fitness is honest. You can’t fake it. You either show up or you don’t.
And that discipline carries over into everything else.
Getting up early to train. Showing up when you don’t feel like it. Staying consistent when motivation dips.
That mindset doesn’t stay in the gym, it shows up in your work, your leadership and your life.
It’s not about the workout. It’s about who you become because of it.
It strengthens your mental resilience
Training, especially endurance work, puts you in uncomfortable places.
Fatigue. Doubt. That voice telling you to stop.
Learning to manage that, to stay composed, to keep moving forward, that’s where the real value is.
Because when pressure shows up in business or life, it doesn’t hit you the same way.
You’ve been here before.
You don’t panic, you respond.
It gives you energy, not just takes it
A lot of people say they’re too tired to train.
In reality, training is often the thing that gives you energy.
Better sleep. Better focus. Better mood. Better output.
When I’m consistent with training, I’m sharper across the board. When I’m not, I notice the drop straight away.
It’s one of the highest return habits you can build.
It keeps you grounded
No matter what’s happening in business (good or bad) fitness brings you back to basics.
It reminds you that:
- Progress takes time
- Consistency matters
- Small actions add up
It’s a reset button.
For me, things like Ironman training have taken that even further. Not because of the event itself, but because of what it represents… long term commitment, discipline and showing up over and over again.
It’s not about being the fittest.
It’s about being someone who takes care of themselves properly.
Because when you do that, everything improves.
Your work. Your mindset. Your relationships.
So if you’ve been putting fitness to the side because life feels busy, I’ll say this:
That’s exactly when you need it most.
You don’t need to go extreme. You don’t need to change everything overnight.
Just start.
Move your body. Build the habit. Stay consistent.
Because once fitness becomes part of your life, not something separate from it, you’ll realise how much easier everything else becomes.
Fitness first. Everything else follows.
