Sales has changed a lot over the years.
Technology has evolved. Buyers are more informed. Attention spans are shorter. Everyone’s got more choice, more noise, more opinions.
But despite all of that, the fundamentals haven’t changed as much as people think.
At its core, sales is still about people.
Over the years, I’ve worked with a lot of salespeople… some average, some good and some exceptional. And what separates the best isn’t just skill. It’s how they approach the role day in, day out.
Here are six things I’ve noticed great salespeople do differently.
1. They listen properly
This sounds basic but it’s where most people get it wrong.
Average salespeople wait for their turn to talk. Great salespeople actually listen.
They’re not just hearing words, they’re understanding intent, picking up on tone, spotting what’s not being said.
Because the more you understand someone, the easier it is to help them.
And that’s what good sales is, helping someone make the right decision, not pushing them into one.
2. They focus on people, not just targets
Targets matter, of course they do.
But the best salespeople don’t wake up thinking about numbers first. They think about people.
Who am I speaking to today? What do they need? How can I add value?
The funny thing is, when you focus on people properly, the numbers tend to take care of themselves.
Short term thinking chases deals. Long term thinking builds relationships.
And relationships are where real success lives.
3. They stay consistent when motivation drops
Everyone feels motivated on a good day.
When things are going well, deals are landing and confidence is high… it’s easy.
The difference shows when it’s not.
Great salespeople don’t rely on motivation. They rely on discipline.
They show up when it’s quiet. They follow up when it’s uncomfortable. They keep going when results aren’t immediate.
Because they understand something simple… consistency wins.
4. They don’t take rejection personally
Rejection is part of the job.
But how you handle it makes all the difference.
Average salespeople take it personally. It knocks their confidence. It affects the next conversation.
Great salespeople understand it’s part of the process.
Not everyone will be a fit. Not everyone will say yes. Not every conversation leads somewhere.
And that’s fine.
They move on quickly, stay level and keep their energy consistent.
5. They adapt their approach
No two people are the same.
What works with one client won’t necessarily work with another. Great salespeople read the room. They adjust their tone, their pace, their style.
Some people want detail. Some want simplicity. Some want speed. Some want reassurance.
If you’re delivering the same message in the same way to everyone, you’re missing opportunities.
Adaptability is a huge edge.
6. They genuinely care
This is the one that matters most.
You can have the best script, the best process, the best product but if you don’t care, people feel it.
And if you do care, people feel that too.
Great salespeople want the right outcome for the person they’re speaking to. They’re not just trying to “close”… they’re trying to solve something.
That builds trust and trust is everything.
Sales isn’t about being the loudest in the room. It’s not about pressure or persuasion tactics and it’s definitely not about shortcuts.
It’s about showing up properly, understanding people, staying consistent and doing the basics really well, over and over again.
The industry will keep evolving. Tools will change. Platforms will change.
But people won’t.
And if you can get good with people, you’ll always be good at sales.
