As an entrepreneur, I’ve come to realise that the foundation of effective leadership is not just about making the right decisions but also about setting the right example.
Arguably moreso within a sales industry like ours. Sales people can often come with the stigma of being pushy, arrogant, aggressive, loud-mouthed, you name it – and it’s not the case, or at least it doesn’t have to be. This is especially important when you’re in a leadership position like myself.
Good leaders must embody the values and principles they want to see in their team. This approach not only fosters respect but also inspires employees to strive for excellence. Here are my thoughts on why leading by example is crucial in business.
Building Trust and Credibility
Trust is the bedrock of any successful organisation.
As a leader, if you expect your team to be honest, hardworking, and dedicated, you must first exhibit these traits yourself. When employees see their leader adhering to the same standards they are asked to follow, it builds trust and credibility.
This trust is essential because it creates a cohesive and motivated team, where everyone feels confident in their roles and responsibilities.
Inspiring and Motivating the Team
Actions speak louder than words.
A leader who consistently demonstrates commitment, resilience, and passion for their work can inspire the same qualities in their team. I’ve found that when I show up early, stay late, and tackle challenges head-on, my team is more likely to do the same.
Leading by example sets a powerful tone and creates a culture of dedication and perseverance.
Encouraging Accountability
Accountability is another critical component of a productive work environment.
By holding myself accountable for my actions and decisions, I encourage my team to take ownership of their work. This accountability leads to higher performance standards and a greater sense of responsibility among employees.
When everyone in the organisation is accountable, it leads to more efficient operations and better outcomes. Basically – own your sh*t.
Promoting a Positive Work Culture
A positive work culture is integral to employee satisfaction and retention.
As a leader, the way I interact with my team, handle stress, and approach problem-solving significantly impacts the overall atmosphere in the workplace.
By maintaining a positive attitude, demonstrating empathy, and providing support, I help cultivate a work environment where employees feel valued and motivated. This positivity trickles down and influences how team members interact with each other, fostering a collaborative and supportive culture.
Driving Continuous Improvement
In business, there’s always room for improvement. Leading by example means showing a commitment to continuous learning and development. When I invest in my growth—whether through professional development courses, reading, or seeking feedback—I signal to my team the importance of ongoing improvement.
This attitude encourages employees to seek out opportunities for their development, driving the collective growth of the organisation.
Strengthening Team Cohesion
A cohesive team works more efficiently and effectively. By leading by example, I help build strong relationships based on mutual respect and understanding.
When team members see their leader working alongside them, facing the same challenges, and celebrating shared successes, it strengthens bonds and promotes a sense of unity. This cohesion is vital for navigating the complexities and challenges that inevitably arise in business.
This is why I chose this specific image to go with this post. That’s me on customer-facing sales with one of our sales representatives. I’m not sat in an office behind a closed door, I’m out with the team doing direct sales; setting the example, setting expectations, getting stuck in and being united.
Leading by example is not just a leadership strategy; it’s a fundamental principle that underpins successful management.
As a business leader, my actions set the standard for my team and shape the culture of my organisation. By building trust, inspiring and motivating my team, encouraging accountability, promoting a positive work culture, driving continuous improvement, and strengthening team cohesion, I can lead The Interactive Team and other businesses to new heights.
Good leadership is about more than directing others—it’s about embodying the values and behaviours that drive success.
